7 Simple Steps to Freedom -
Getting Your Home-Based Business off the Ground

by Sandy Reed

So, you've been thinking about getting out of the corporate rat race for years, and starting your own home-based business. But your old friend FEAR keeps reminding you about how good you have it -- paid vacation, benefits, a good steady paycheck . . . Still it's hard to leave your kids every morning and let someone else shape their lives for 10-12 hours a day. It's hard to give up the dream of being in control of all of your time.

Are you ready to pay the price for the freedom of owning your own business?

Are you ready to create a business that feeds your spirit -- not just your bank account? If so, how do you get ready mentally and emotionally to take that leap of faith? Leaving the past behind and focusing on these 7 steps will help you kick into high gear and launch your new business.

1. As a new business owner, one of the first things I did was hire a business coach who could support me mentally and give me a kick in the pants when it was needed. Since I was new to the construction industry, my coach gave me ideas about how to market my business. I couldn't tell you how to frame a window or put in a faucet, but today I know how to market our business and get the telephone to ring.

2. The second thing I did was attend a class called Calaveras Entrepreneurs. This class took me through all the steps to write a business plan. I don't know about you, but before I became a business owner writing a business plan rated right up there with going to the dentist. But a funny thing happened as I was going through the process.

I could see what we needed to do to make the business work, and how we could get out of the debt we were incurring as a new business start-up. That alone was worth the time and effort it took to go through the process -- not to mention my peace of mind.

3. After I got my mental state on the right track, and I had a plan developed, I began working on my internal belief and motivation. Since I worked for AT&T for 24 years, I was deep into the corporate mindset and sorely missed that regular paycheck. It was critical that I develop the belief that I could survive outside my old mode of operation.

Building belief is a matter of getting your mind to accept that you can (1) survive, and (2) thrive in a new home-based business that you've created. In other words, it's an inside job. I'm a spiritual person, so that's the first place I turned to work on building belief. I believe that we're all put here to lead a wonderful life, but sometimes we get in our own way. If you've been exposed to the movie The Secret you understand the principles I utilized. For you, building belief may come from studying how other successful people have reached their goals, or surrounding yourself with people who have already done what you're trying to do, and emulating their steps to success.

4. Action, action, action . . . We worked the hours and did what our coach told us to do to the best of our ability -- no excuses. We sat many a night stuffing envelopes with our marketing information to reach potential customers -- and it worked. The more effort we put into reaching out and finding customers and joint venture partners, the more rewards we reaped. The bottom line here is the Universe has to know you're serious. If you get all this information, then sit back and expect a yellow page ad to bring you all the business you want, you're fooling yourself, but not the Universe, which has the power to bring you all the business you want. So get busy and take action!

5. Since my husband and I were new to the community, we made sure we attended the local business and Chamber of Commerce functions. We networked with other business owners and with our suppliers. Visibility is another critical component of a new business start-up, whether it is a face-to-face or online presence. People need to know you exist and what you have to offer.

6. No matter how discouraged I got during this process, I kept doing what I had to do to keep our business "healthy". In those days to me healthy meant that we maintained our good credit rating and our good standing in the business community. I had many "dark nights of the soul" when I had to borrow money to pay our bills. I struggled with the feeling that we were going one step forward, and two steps back, but I did what I had to do anyway. I just kept taking the action steps that moved us forward.

7. Be grateful for all of your successes, and you will be paving the way for even more to appear. If I had moaned and groaned and complained about our business not looking like I thought it should, there would have been no room left in my mind for the wonderful ideas that came my way. I had to stay open to the possibility that even though I couldn't see the progress at the time, it was percolating beneath the surface of my awareness. Since I had an open mind, ideas came that helped us stay on track to creating the million dollar business we have today. If you've chosen the right business, it will be more than a road to making money. It will express who you are and what you value. In reality you are not your career or your business. You're a unique and valuable person with much to offer the world. Ideally your business will be a way for you to express this value and uniqueness in the world. In my case, I was pursuing a business that expressed my husband's unique gifts, not necessarily my own. At that point in our lives, it was necessary for both of us to focus on this business to pay the bills. My dream business came later . . .

Most of all, remember when you're experiencing the growing pains of building your business, in the end people won't remember what you do for them as much as they'll remember how you were with them.

 From Small and Simple Things...

by Marnie Pehrson

It is said that, ''by small and simple things great things are brought to pass.'' Sometimes we feel that in order for great things to happen in our lives, some dramatic event must occur. We'll get called by Oprah to be on her show and become an overnight success. Or we'll win the lottery and pay off all our debts. Or we'll land the perfect job that will solve all our money problems.

Although it may appear that success simply falls into some people's laps, this is rarely the case. What we don't see are the thousands of small and simple things that a successful person has done over several years or even over the course of his/her life that built up to great events. (And I'm not talking about buying a lottery ticket every day to win the lottery.) So what are these small and simple things from which great things are brought to pass?

Desire

It may seem simple, but you have to want something before you can go after it. You have to want to go to Disney World before you get in the car to go there. True success starts with some level of desire for something -- a better life, a better business, or better relationships with your family. You have to want it before you'll ever achieve it.

Commitment

If you're ever going to arrive at your destination, you must at some point decide to leave. You have to decide that you're willing to do what it takes to make it happen. It is in the moment of decision that your course is set and the universe begins to bring opportunities into your path to help you achieve what you have decided to do.

Sacrifice

One definition of sacrifice is "giving up something good for that which is even better." Being willing to sacrifice for what you want is a critical ingredient of success. In our Disney World example, if you've decided on a trip to Disney World, you're most likely sacrificing a trip somewhere else - like Las Vegas or San Francisco. You're also sacrificing the money and the time it takes to go there.

Faith

Whether or not you think you have faith, everyone does. You believe the sun will rise tomorrow. You plant a seed in hopes that it will grow into a lovely flower or vegetable. It takes faith to start a business in hopes that you will be successful. When you send your children out the door for school in the morning you believe they will return to you in the afternoon. Everything you do in your live requires some degree of faith. The more faith you have, the more you can accomplish. The more you dare to dream and believe and envision, the more you can achieve.

Diligence

Constant movement toward your goal brings about achievement. You must do something and keep on doing it to accomplish anything. It takes ongoing, physical movement to accomplish anything in life. You have to move your body into the car to go to Disney World. You have to move your fingers to type that book. You have to bend at the waist to do those sit-ups. You have to ''keep on keeping on'' no matter what obstacles cross your path and no matter what stands in your way. Diligence requires patience and steadfastness.

Keep Your Eyes Open

As you commit, have faith, and diligently work toward your objectives, opportunities arise along the way to help you reach your goals. But, you must be open to new ideas, new possibilities, and new ways of doing things. You must keep your eyes, ears, mind, and heart open so that when opportunities make themselves available to you, you act on them.

Remembering

Periodically, we humans get sidetracked on roads that aren't going where we really want to go. We stop off in some dinky town to see the largest ball of twine and forget that we're really trying to make our way to Disney World. We have to stop and remember where we're going. We have to remember who we are, what we're trying to achieve. Losing focus on our ultimate objective can cause us to risk wandering aimlessly lost on back roads and dead-ends for so long that we never arrive at our destination.

In Summary

Success in any endeavor requires these small and simple steps, yet many people never know that they are necessary. Too many people decide to go into a business and even get an office, but never really commit to doing what it takes to get business. They never really try to get customers.

  • Start with your desire,
  • Commit to the project,
  • Have faith that you can accomplish it and really see yourself accomplishing it.
  • Take consistent action.
  • Keep your eyes open for opportunities -- expect them to arise -- and grab them with both arms when they do.
  • Occasionally review your progress and make sure you're still on the right path. Remember who you are, why you're here, and where you're going.
It's that simple. Here's to your success!

Use Organic Products for a Natural Skin Care Routine

by Judy Wellsworth

Our lives today are full of organic things.

When you are talking about taking care of your skin, you will not find anything that there is to talk about. When you are at peace with nature, you are dealing with the best thing that you could ever give your skin.

You will be able to find hundreds of products that deal with the skin that are sold today and are there for bringing you into the realm of the all natural.

Upon further investigation, and after looking at the list of ingredients, you will find that they are not at all natural in any way.

Whatever you use on the outside of your body will also go straight into the inside of your body. That is a bad thought. Most of the synthetic items that are put into the products for skin care are actually carcinogenic and eventually build in your body until you get cancer and diseases in later years.

The problem is that the products that claim to be all natural or organic in nature are not regulated by the FDA and can just have a small amount of natural thing in it for it to say it is all natural or organic.

The list below are synthetic items that you need to be on the lookout for. To ingredients that are used as preservatives are called imidazolidinyl and formaldahyde. The imidazolidinyl urea is the ingredient that is used in fingernail polish, fingernail hardeners, and makeup. The two ingredients are related to negative reactions of the skin. Any perfume that is made from synthetic ingredients should not be used on the body. You should try to find perfumes that only have natural ingredients in them or are made from essential oils and essences to use on your skin.

Methyl Paraben is a preservative that is used excessively much in products and is thought to be irritating to the skin. Xenoestrogen is a carcinogen that makes it difficult for women to have children and may cause cysts in the breast.

You need to be careful with butyl, ethyl, and propyl barapen also. Isopropyl alcohol can give you an anti-bacterial cleaning but you should be aware that it comes from petroleum and you should consider that before you use it instead of other alcohols. It is not one of the things you should use for your all-natural ingredients.

Methylisothiazolinone is also a preservative used in skin products. There are no things known about this particular ingredient except that it is not natural. Paraffin is also a petroleum product and should be avoided in the products you put on your skin and the candles you use because it is taken in to the body by smell. It is also used in products such as creams for the face, products to remove hair, pencils used for the eyebrows and lips, and more. You may as well be using the petroleum right on the skin.

Propylene glycol is also made from petroleum and is known to come from glycerin that is made from vegetables and is common for moisturizing the skin. Sodium lauryl sulphate is a detergent that is used for cleaning, will leave the skin feeling dry, and will irritate the skin. It is a part of the sulfur family.

The right thing for you to do is to use only natural ingredients and to produce your own skin care products. Mother Nature gives you the better ingredients that you can use for natural skin care for your face and skin. You can use things like honey for a good moisturizer. You can add oatmeal and yogurt to the honey and you will have made yourself the best exfoliant you can get. Hemp oil is also a wonderful thing for you to use to hydrate your face. Tea tree oil is the best thing for your skin all over and works to kill germs. It can also be great for treating blemishes and cuts.

The best thing about organic products for your skin is that it is easier for you to make it right at home than it is to buy it. It will help you to have more time and money and will give you the best for your body that you can.

NOTE from Editor: We've compiled this list of ingredients found in Ms. Wellsworth's article for your convenience. The article was not edited in any way:
