Natural Choices for Women's Health: How the Secrets of Natural and Chinese Medicine Can Create a Lifetime of Wellness
- by Dr. Lara Steelsmith

This gem of a book sits firmly between East and West, blending the best of natural medicine from both hemispheres.

Natural Choices for Women’s Health is designed around Dr. Laurie Steelsmith’s (the author) identification of what she calls “the 10 crucial components” of a woman’s health.

You’ll find each of the “crucial components” detailed in its own chapter. Each chapter gives you the “View from the East” and “View from the West” combination of lifestyle and remedies for optimum health in all ten crucial component areas.

The introduction contains a chart that lists women’s health issues with corresponding component and chapter number so that you can immediately skip to that section to read about available and proven remedies for any certain issue you may currently experience.

This gives you options:

  • read those portions of the book only, or
  • read the whole book

The author does recommend, however, that all women read Chapter I before reading any other chapter. Chapter I contains the fundamentals of how to manifest and maintain great overall health.

It also contains charts that list the individual energetic properties of various foods. This great tool allows you to easily and quickly balance your food choices as per their properties.

Each chapter ends with a section that gives you the essence of the chapter so that you can quickly see whether any of the issues in a particular chapter concern you, or you can use it for a quick review after reading the chapter.

You’ll want to keep this one nearby as your reference for what the natural medical world, East and West, have to offer you in the way of healing yourself.

I’m finding that it’s great to have around so that I can quickly refer to it just before a visit to my naturopath: this way I understand clearly what’s she’s talking about when discussing my options with me for healing any ailment.

Read On!

Very complete guide for women's health!!, July 21, 2005
By  Leah J. Mcneill "Jennifer McNeill" (Seattle Wa.)
I have enjoyed reading many health books over the years and this one really caught my eye. I loved the uniqueness of how chinese medicine and natural medicine were brought together in this book. I have never seen that done before. It's a very understandable and comprehensive journey through women's health issues. I have enjoyed it very much and have recommended it to many friends and family. What a great assest this book is to my health library!!

This book was introduced in a women's magazine, January 18, 2006
    By  Ursula Eskridge (Brooklyn, NY)
I first read about this book in a women's magazine. Several ailments were described and I tried the one where it was recommended to take Withanolides for Insomnia. I went and got the herb and the product that they talked about at my local Vitamin Shoppe store and that stuff really works!! I have tried several well known herbs who are suppossed to relax you and make you sleep better but this one is really the best. After that I bought the book and it's great. It's an easy read and gives Chinese medicine the attention it deserves. I recommend this book to everyone.

Natural Choices for Women's Health, July 16, 2007
By  Dr. Tami Brady "Founder of Allies of Hope" (Calgary, Canada)
Natural Choices for Women's Health is a must have reference for all women. This book details a very complete list of common female health issues including everything from anxiety and breast cancer through fatigue and hot flashes to PMS and weight gain. In each of these cases, this book gives the reader ideas on what she can do to help alleviate these issues as well as medical resources available for dealing with these conditions.

Though I found these aspects helpful and appealing, the part of this book I was most impressed with was the assessment of health issues according to the five elements. At first, I thought that figuring out my element type was just a bit of fun, rather like determining my star sign. However, once I found my element type I started to realize the significance of this very important information. It seems that certain element types are more or less prone to certain afflictions. Moreover, the ways to treat imbalances need to be tailored to suit the person's element type.

My element type and associated health issues were dead on describing me in amazing detail, giving me tremendous insight into myself as well as health and medical information that I could actually use to make myself feel better.
